5 Steps

to setting up your own

Truth Booth

STEP 1 - FINANCIAL

Tally your expected expenses, including:

- Mall Expenses: short term leasing, signage and insurance
- Materials: Equipment and Supplies
    - Equipment: TV(s), DVD player, information holders, ink stamps (for crisis pregnancy centers), etc.
    - Supplies: take-away materials, brochures, decorations

Determine if you will need to do fundraising. If you can partner with a non-profit organization, donations can be tax deductible. If you can find local businesses to pay for a month's rent, you can offer them a sponsorship placard for that month.

STEP 2 - MALL CONTRACT

Contact the mall’s Short Term Leasing Department for interview. Be sure to request "educational" and/or "unmanned" kiosk rental pricing, which can be substantially lower than retail kiosk rent. Bring 4 items:

1 - Truth Booth photos (click here)
2 - Ultrasound DVD, or if they have a broadband Internet connection, have them view the video on this site
3 - Handout and brochure samples. It is important for the mall to approve the handouts ahead of time.
4 - Ultrasound machine photo (click here)

On the application, the “purpose of use” should state: “Education: Show 3D and 4D Ultrasound Technology of Healthy Babies Before Birth”. Give the property manager a choice of titles, “Truth Booth” “3&4D Ultrasound, “Babies Before Birth”.

Discuss a good location for the kiosk with the mall management staff. For instance, if there is a female fashion area of the mall, this would be an ideal setting.

Based on your budget, you may run a few months or the entire year. If constrained to a few months, consider which months would be best to run. The highest traffic months are Nov/Dec which may rent out at quadruple the other months of the year and be cost prohibitive. Other high traffic months include the holidays of Easter, Mother's Day and the Back to School season. Consider your demographics. Seasonal tourism may increase or decrease traffic for given months.

STEP 3 - MATERIALS

EQUIPMENT

The first and most considerable supply expense is for one or two TVs (or monitors), one DVD player (with repeat mode), a “Y” splitter cable to play multiple TV’s simultaneously (if necessary), an ultrasound DVD, brochures, brochure holders, signage, padlocks and poster board (or something similar) to conceal the backs of the TV’S and wires. Pictures of babies are attractive on the board. In Cleveland, a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) was added to keep the DVD running in the event of a power failure. The TVs do not need to run during power outages, just the DVD player so it will not need restarting. When the power returns, then the TVs will as well.

Display items may include:

DVD - Contact us to get a copy of our three minute fetal development DVD (intended to run on infinite loop).

Ultrasound Machine photo - Click here  (same as Step 2 above)

Sponsor - Click here for a sample

"Baby John" or other photos of ultrasound and birth pictures of same baby

SUPPLIES

Handout materials may vary. Highly recommended is:

Focus on the Family - "First 9 Months" Click here for order form and look for:
Fetal Development Pack   F00107K   The First Nine Months  (F00251T)
On the back of this publication, we ink-stamp the names and phone numbers of
a couple of Crisis Pregnancy Centers local to the mall.

Little One Publishing - "Watch Me Grow”  Click here for information and order form

A publication listing local social resources (in Cleveland, we offer the Hands of Hope directory)

STEP 4 - VOLUNTEERS

Recruit reliable volunteers to open and close the kiosk during mall hours. Every mall has specific procedures and requirements. Create an instruction document for the volunteers explaining how to operate the DVD player and how to report supply status. VERY IMPORTANT: Train volunteers on the "Truth Booth Philosophy" which is education, not confrontation. Stay in the background and let the images do the talking. It only takes one offended shopper for the mall to cancel your agreement. The mall that the Cleveland Truth Booth runs in is 24/7. Because of this, it is not opened and closed daily, the video runs 24/7. It is, however, restocked with take-away materials on a near daily basis. Re-stocking is simple as it is not fixed into particular time zones like opening and closing.

STEP 5 - ADVERTISE

Invite local parochial schools to take a “field trip” to the mall to see the DVD. Announce to churches the dates the mall will show the DVD and invite them to come.
